Healing abutments are temporarily placed on top of the implant during surgery to shape the gum to the correct emergence profile to aesthetically restore using a permanent crown and to avoid any additional surgical procedures on the implant. The shape of the healing abutment can be flared to achieve smooth emergence profile from implant to crown or parallel-sided for narrow diameter teeth.
