Why the Implant Locator Pin Belongs in Your Restoration Workflow

A small tool that makes seating copings and abutments easier — and catches angulation problems before they cost you a remake.

The implant locator pin is one of the least expensive items in a restorative tray and one of the most underused. At a glance it is a simple machined pin. In practice it solves two problems that quietly cost time and money on nearly every implant case: finding the implant and reading its angulation.

What it does

After healing, the implant platform is often hidden below tissue or surrounded by a tight emergence profile. Blindly probing for the connection — or repeatedly seating and removing an impression coping to find it — wastes chair time and risks cross-threading expensive components.

The Titan Implant Locator Pin is a stainless steel threaded pin with a serrated handle that screws into the implant by hand. Seated, it gives you a slim, clearly visible reference post that shows exactly where the implant is and which way it points before you commit a coping or abutment. Reason 1: Faster, cleaner seating

Once the pin reveals the implant position and trajectory, the impression coping or abutment goes in along the correct path on the first attempt. No guesswork, no repeated try-in, far less chance of cross-threading. On a single unit that saves a minute or two. Reason 2: Read angulation before you choose components

This is the pin's highest-value use. The visible pin is a direct readout of implant angulation. Sighting down it, you can judge immediately:

  • Whether implants in a multi-unit case are reasonably parallel
  • How much angulation correction an abutment will need
  • Whether a straight abutment will work, or an angled or modifiable abutment is required
  • Whether non-parallel placement will force you to modify attachments

Catching an angulation problem here — rather than after the impression, or after the lab returns the case — is the difference between a component swap and a remake.

The pin is not only a chairside tool. In the lab, slide a plastic sleeve down the pin and wax up to the desired gingival height — the ease of sliding the pattern on and off speeds custom abutment fabrication considerably.

How to use it: a simple sequence

  1. Expose and clean the implant connection after healing.
  2. Seat the locator pin into the implant. Confirm it engages fully and sits passively.
  3. Assess angulation. Sight down the pin; on multi-unit cases compare pins for parallelism. Decide straight versus angled or modifiable abutment now.
  4. Select your components — impression coping or abutment — based on what the pin told you.
  5. Remove the pin and seat the chosen component along the verified path.

Worth keeping a few on hand

At $15.00 each, a locator pin costs a fraction of one wasted impression coping, and far less than a single remake. Keeping several in your restorative kit means you are never tempted to skip the step that prevents the most expensive mistakes.
