3i certain compatible abutment selection guide

Biomet 3i Certain Internal Hex Compatible Abutment Selection Guide

Four checks to choose a Titan compatible abutment for T3 Certain, Osseotite Certain, Full Osseotite Certain and Nanotite Certain implants. All share one internal hex connection; the color-coded platform is the only variable.

Certain or external hex? “Osseotite” is a surface used on both 3i connections, and their parts do not interchange. If the record doesn’t say “Certain,” use the 3i external hex guide. This is the most common 3i ordering error.

Step 1: Identify the platform by color

The platform, not the implant body, decides the parts. Find the body diameter and design on the surgical record or packaging, then read across.

  • Packaging color can mislead: a 5/4 Certain implant comes in Yellow (5.0mm) packaging but seats on the Blue (4.1mm) platform. Use 4.1mm parts.
  • 3.25 and 3.4 are the same purple platform. Components fit both.

Step 2: Choose the abutment type

Abutment Use it for
Straight Locking Abutment Cement-retained single crowns. The internal hex engages for anti-rotation.
Wide Emergence Prepable Abutment (Titan Design) A wide emergence you prep to the form you need: custom emergence or angle correction without a custom-milled abutment. Also called modifiable.
Castable Abutment, hex or non-hex Custom cast work. Hex for engaging single units; non-hex for splinted restorations.
Temporary Abutment Provisionals during healing. Textured for acrylic retention.
Ball Abutment Overdenture retention with O-ring housings.

Step 3: Choose the emergence profile and collar height

Match the emergence profile to the cervical diameter of the tooth being replaced, supporting the papillae without compressing them. Probe tissue depth from the platform to the gingival crest and choose the collar that puts the shoulder at or just below the margin. Titan carries more collar heights and profile diameters for Certain than the OEM catalog, including on the purple (3.4mm) and green (6.0mm) platforms where OEM selection is limited.

Step 4: Confirm seating before torquing

The internal hex must be fully engaged, with no gap between the abutment and the platform. Titan’s Implant Locator Pin (M1.6-ILP-22 for Certain) guides the abutment in for parallel seating, especially in posterior sites with limited visibility.

Frequently asked questions

Are the 3.25 and 3.4 Certain platforms the same?
Yes. Both designations are the purple platform, and components interchange.

Do Certain components fit T3 implants?
Yes. T3 Certain uses the same Certain internal connection as Osseotite, Full Osseotite and Nanotite Certain.

Do Certain and 3i external hex abutments interchange?
No. They are different connections. See the external hex guide.
