A reference for straight abutments, plastic sleeves, and impression copings.
"Engaging" and "non-engaging" describe whether a component interfaces with the implant's anti-rotational feature. Because ordering the wrong type is a common source of returns, this guide explains what each term means and the general applications each is associated with. The selection for any case is a clinical determination.
The reason for the distinction: on splinted cases across non-parallel implants, fixed anti-rotational features can prevent a passive framework fit, so non-engaging components are typically specified. On single units, a non-engaging component would allow the restoration to rotate. The appropriate choice for a given case is determined by the clinician and the restoration design.
Straight abutments — Titan carries both engaging abutments and non-engaging bar post / post abutments (including versions designed for laser-welding).
Plastic sleeves / UCLA / castable — available in engaging and non-engaging versions for single custom-cast components and splinted framework patterns respectively.
Impression copings — two distinctions apply here, and they're separate from each other:
Titan carries one-piece (closed-tray) posts and two-piece copings in both open- and closed-tray versions across our systems. If you're unsure which your case or system calls for, we can confirm before you order.
| Restoration type | Abutment | Plastic sleeve | Impression coping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single crown | Engaging | Engaging | Per system & technique* |
| Splinted / multi-unit | Non-engaging | Non-engaging | Per system & technique* |
General reference only. *Impression coping type depends on one-piece vs. two-piece construction (which sets closed- vs. open-tray) and on the implant system (which sets engaging vs. non-engaging) — these are separate from the abutment/sleeve choice. The appropriate component for any case depends on the restoration design, the implant system, and clinical judgment.
