ZimVie TSX and TSV compatible abutment selection guide

How to Choose the Right Abutment for a Zimmer TSX / TSV Implant

A four-step guide to selecting the correct platform, emergence-profile diameter, and collar height for ZimVie / Zimmer Tapered Screw-Vent (TSV) and TSX implants — so you match the site precisely off the shelf, without a custom-milled abutment.

Titan stocks a wider range of emergence-profile diameters and collar heights for these platforms than is available elsewhere. More sizes only help if you can pick the right one quickly — that is what this guide is for.

STEP 1: CONFIRM YOUR PLATFORM

The TSV/TSX system uses three prosthetic platforms. Platform size is determined by the implant body diameter — check the surgical record or implant packaging.

Platform Color Code TSV Body Ø TSX Body Ø
3.5mm Green 3.7mm, 4.1mm 3.7mm, 4.1mm, 4.7mm
4.5mm Purple 4.7mm 5.4mm, 6.0mm
5.7mm Gold 6.0mm

Important: The 4.7mm TSV routes to the 4.5mm platform, but the 4.7mm TSX routes to the 3.5mm platform. The 6.0mm TSV routes to the 5.7mm platform, but the 6.0mm TSX routes to the 4.5mm platform. Always confirm both the body diameter and the implant generation (TSV vs TSX).

Step 2: Select Emergence-Profile Diameter

The emergence-profile diameter is the widest point of the abutment at the gingival margin. It shapes how the restoration transitions from the narrow implant platform to the full tooth contour. Select based on the tooth being replaced and the soft tissue anatomy at the site.

  • Narrower profiles for anterior sites, tight interdental spaces, or where you want tissue to fill around the restoration.
  • Wider profiles for posterior sites (premolars, molars) where the crown diameter is larger and the tissue needs to be supported over a broader area.

As a general guideline, match the emergence-profile diameter to the cervical diameter of the tooth being replaced. Titan offers more profile diameter options per platform than the OEM catalog, giving you finer control over the tissue contour without custom fabrication.

Step 3: Select Collar Height

Collar height is the vertical distance from the implant platform to the abutment shoulder (finish line). It determines how deep or shallow the crown margin sits relative to the gingiva.

Measure tissue depth from the implant platform to the gingival crest using a periodontal probe. Select a collar height that places the abutment shoulder at or just below the gingival margin.

  • Too short: Margin ends up deep subgingivally. Cement cleanup becomes difficult and excess cement can cause peri-implant inflammation.
  • Too tall: Margin sits supragingivally. Metal shows at the tissue line, compromising esthetics.

Titan’s TSV/TSX compatible abutments are available in more collar height increments than the OEM offering, so you can fine-tune the margin position rather than settling for the closest available option.

Step 4: Verify the Locator Pin Thread

Titan’s proprietary Implant Locator Pin simplifies abutment and impression coping seating on TSV/TSX implants. The pin threads into the implant body, and the abutment slides over it for guided, parallel placement. The TSV/TSX locator pin uses the same thread as the Zimmer internal hex fixture mount. Verify you have the correct locator pin for the Zimmer internal hex connection before your first use.

Quick Reference

Decision Determined By Key Rule
Platform Implant body diameter + generation (TSV vs TSX) Green 3.5mm, Purple 4.5mm, Gold 5.7mm. Same body Ø can route differently for TSV vs TSX.
Profile Diameter Tooth being replaced & site anatomy Match cervical diameter of replaced tooth. Narrower for anteriors, wider for posteriors.
Collar Height Tissue depth at implant site Probe tissue depth. Place shoulder at or just below gingival margin.
Locator Pin Implant connection type Use the Zimmer internal hex locator pin. Same thread as TSV/TSX fixture mount.
