A reference to the three dimensions that define our straight and healing abutments: profile, collar, and prep height.
Every straight and healing abutment we make is defined by three dimensions beyond its implant connection: the emergence profile diameter, the collar (gingival) height, and the prep height (for prepared/preparable abutments). Understanding what each of these dimensions controls makes it easier to identify the component that fits your case. This guide describes what these dimensions are and the range Titan offers — the selection decision remains yours.
1. Seating surface / platform diameter — the diameter where the abutment meets the implant. This is dictated by the implant's platform (for example 3.4mm, 4.1mm, 5.0mm, or 6.0mm) and must match the implant placed.
2. Emergence profile diameter and collar height — how the component transitions from the implant platform to the gingival margin, and how far the smooth collar extends into the soft tissue.
3. Prep height — the height of the coronal (top) portion of the abutment available for crown preparation, measured from the top of the collar to the top of the abutment.
The emergence profile describes how the component widens from the platform toward the gingival margin.
As a general reference, narrower emergence profiles correspond to the natural cross-section of anterior and premolar teeth, while wider profiles correspond to molars. The appropriate profile for any given case is a clinical determination.
The collar (also called gingival or cuff height) is the distance from the implant platform to the restorative margin. It positions the margin relative to the gingival crest. Titan offers an unusually wide collar-height range on our straight locking abutment line — from 1.0mm to 5.5mm in 0.5mm increments on applicable platforms — so the margin position can be matched to soft-tissue depth without custom milling.
The prep height is the vertical portion of the abutment above the collar that’s available for crown preparation. It determines how much material you have to shape the abutment for your crown — more prep height gives more room for adjustment; less prep height is useful when interocclusal space is limited.
